Reverse Engineering & Modernisation

First understand.
Then evolve.

Valuable knowledge is embedded in software that has grown over time. We make structures, business rules and dependencies comprehensible - as a basis for safe changes and gradual modernisation.

Starting point Does this sound familiar?

The system is important.
The overview is missing.

A working system does not have to be fully replaced. Often it first needs a clear view of what is already there.

  • Important business rules exist only in the code.
  • Documentation is patchy or outdated.
  • Interfaces and data dependencies are unclear.
  • Changes have consequences that are hard to predict.
  • Knowledge is concentrated in individual people.

Result A basis for decisions

Unknown code
becomes a clear plan.

The concrete results depend on the available documents, access and the agreed scope of analysis.

  1. 01

    System overview

Present components, integrations and essential data flows in a comprehensible way.

  2. 02

    Comprehensible business logic

Document reconstructed rules and clarify open questions with the business side.

  3. 03

    Prioritised fields of action

Assess technical risks, improvement opportunities and necessary preparatory work.

  4. 04

    Modernisation roadmap

Weigh up preservation, refactoring, gradual replacement or redevelopment.

Good to know Questions about reverse engineering

The existing system sets the path.

Do you need the source code?

Source code makes a deep analysis considerably easier. Documentation, data models, interface descriptions and a running application are also helpful. What is achievable without source code depends on the system, the access and the available analysis methods.

Can you also examine older applications?

Applications that have grown over time and the integration of legacy systems are part of our project experience. Whether and to what extent we can analyse your specific system we clarify based on its technology and the available materials.

Is AI used in the analysis?

AI can support structuring code, recognising relationships and drafting documentation. Its results are reviewed; processing project material in AI tools is agreed in advance.

Does the application have to be shut down in the meantime?

Many analysis steps can be carried out using source code, documents or a separate test environment. Interventions in running systems and the necessary access are agreed within the project.
